Senior All-America Mike Hutton was named Central Region Track Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season. He won the same award last March for the indoor season just days before winning the NCAA indoor championship in the 800 meters.
It's the fourth major award he's received in 2012. In March he received his second-consecutive MIAC indoor meet Outstanding Men's Track Athlete award for his contributions to another St. Thomas title. Hutton won the 800 for the second year in a row, and added a victory in the 600-meter run after claiming the 600-yard title last year (the event was changed this season). Hutton's winning time in the 800 was 1:52.69 and he won the 600 in 1:20.29. Both times set new Leonard Center records.
Last week, Hutton won the Outstanding Men's Track Athlete award for the 2012 outdoor meet after he won the 800 and anchored the winning 4x400 and 4x800 relays to help UST hold off Hamline for the team championship.
Hutton, who holds three Tommie indoor records at 600, 800 and 1000, broke his school outdoor record for 800 meters in April with a 1:49.45 clocking at the Mt. Sac (Calif.) Relays. One week later in a field of all Division I runners, he placed second in 1:49.47. He's seeded second for next weekend's national meet in Los Angeles.
